Women's Papua Paddle Team Wins Gold Medal at Popnas 2019

The Papua contingent finally won gold in the women's rowing sports rowing. This became the only gold won by Papua in the 2019 National Student Sports Week (Popnas) Jakarta.

The gold medal was won by the Papuan rowing team who dropped in the women's Kayak 4 number 1,000 meters away. Papua's Kayak 4 women's rowing team won the gold medal with a record time of 4.08 minutes, followed by the South Kalimantan team, 4.11 minutes. While West Java won a bronze medal with 4.12 minutes.

While the silver medal was presented by Herlin April Lali women's Canoeing (C1) number, the gold medal in this number was won by Jambi athlete Devita Safitri and the bronze medal won by South Sumatra athlete. Then a bronze medal was presented by Anjelina Koibur in the women's Kayak (K1) number, a gold medal won by the Central Javanese peddler Fitriani Nadea and a silver medal belonging to Melati Fajar Ningrum.

Paddle coach of Papua, Erni Sokoy, said he was grateful for the achievements of his team. "We previously targeted two gold medals, but only got one, we apologize to the Department of Youth and Sports and the people of Papua for not being able to realize these targets," he said.

According to Erni, the Papua rowing team were on average new athletes and only made preparations for three months, while their opponents made lengthy preparations and many of them were national training athletes. "I am proud of the Papua rowing athletes, although they are new but can provide competition to national training athletes from other provinces," he said again.

Papua Sport and Youth Service Secretary, Idris Salama said he was happy and appreciated because rowing could donate a gold medal for the Papuan contingent. "Thank God, we won a gold medal, meaning Popnas 2019 achievements have improved from two years ago in Central Java, we did not get a gold medal," he said.

Idris said, after returning to Jayapura, sports which failed to donate a medal for Papua at the 2019 National Popnas would be evaluated by the Sports and Youth Agency. "So it's not just the sport, we will evaluate all coaches," he said.

He said, the pinnacle of student athlete achievement was at Popnas, so if it failed, it would certainly be evaluated. Then those who fail can no longer enter the Student Training and Training Center (PPLP), must join the selection with other students. "Later we will return to Jayapura immediately we will evaluate it," he concluded.

Thus the total Papua Province has collected, 1 gold, 2 silver and 11 bronze medals.
