Papua and West Papua Ready to Apply Green Economy

West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan is committed to making West Papua a sustainable and pro-conservation province by accommodating 70 percent of the land area into a conservation area.

Dominggus, said various efforts include increasing deforestation prevention by reviewing the licensing process, and strengthening spatial planning that is more pro-environment, expanding and improving the management of natural protection areas both forests, seas and important areas for indigenous peoples.

In addition, the Provincial Government will also encourage the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples, develop and encourage green economic growth and the use of environmental services where tourism is a leading sector for sustainable economic growth.

Dominggus continued, other efforts made, namely supporting restrictions on the shipment of logs outside West Papua and the total protection of West Papua's mangrove and peat ecosystems, eradicating Illegal Logging and law enforcement, as well as preventing environmental pollution by limiting and removing packaging and plastic bags.

Meanwhile, the Papua Provincial Government is focused on promoting green economic growth in the Cenderawasih Earth Forest. However, to be able to make this happen, it is believed that collaboration between provinces and districts is needed. So through this collaboration, it is hoped that all parties will be strongly committed to jointly protect the remaining forests in Papua.

To encourage the achievement of a sustainable development program, the Provincial Government of Papua is preparing a Master Plan and Road Map for sustainable land-based Green Economy growth.

The master plan and road map of green growth are expected to be able to accommodate the sustainable national green economy recovery target. On the other hand, achieving inclusive and equitable growth, social, economic and environmental resilience of healthy ecosystems in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
