Papua Provincial Government sends 70 tons of Merauke rice to PNG

The Provincial Government of Papua will send 70 tons of rice from Merauke to Madang, Papua New Guinea (PNG). The 70 tons of rice are expected to arrive in Jayapura next month (February) and then be sent to Madang by sea.
.
"The rice is currently on its way from Merauke by boat," Papua Provincial Government's Border and Foreign Cooperation Bureau Chief Suzana Wanggai told Antara in Jayapura on Wednesday.
.
Indeed, the journey from Merauke is quite long because I have to go to Sorong first and then to Jayapura. Later in Jayapura, the rice will be sent using a ship that has been prepared and entirely addressed to Madang.
.
Suzana Wanggai said the rice was aids from the Papua Provincial Government for two provinces in PNG namely Madang and New Britain, as well as introducing rice produced by Merauke.
.
"Hopefully in the future rice from Merauke can penetrate the PNG market given the abundant rice production in southern Papua," said Suzana Wanggai. At present, Merauke Regency is the only region in Papua that has the widest agricultural area for rice.
