PT Pelayaran Indonesia (Pelni) Jayapura Branch has prepared six passenger ships to serve the community who want to go home before Christmas 2019 and New Year 2020.

Head of Jayapura Pelni Branch Harianto Sembiring in Jayapura, Wednesday, said to address the soaring transportation demand at Christmas and New Year starting on D-14, 11 December 2019 to D-14, January 8, 2020, he had made preparations according to the schedule and route of his ship. "We are preparing six ships namely KM Dobonsolo, Mount Dempo, Labobar, Sinabung, Ciremai and Tidar," he said.

According to Harianto, this anticipatory step was taken because of predictions of the high price of airplane tickets making people of Jayapura, Papua who want to go home to celebrate Christmas and New Year in their hometowns prefer the sea transportation mode even though it takes a long time.

The momentum of Christmas and New Year which coincides with the education semester holidays is always used by the majority of Indonesian people, especially in Papua, for a vacation. No wonder in Papua air and sea transportation passengers have also risen dramatically, which can also affect ticket prices.

Garuda Indonesia General Manager of Jayapura Branch Donald Jerry Rieuwpassa said it had enacted additional flights following increasing ticket sales since November 2019. Purchases of tickets to Jakarta from Jayapura, Donald said, since November 2019 each day rose 15 percent. "Extra flights (extra flight) have 4 flights route Jayapura - Jakarta using aircraft capacity of 162 seats and 180 seats, or about 7 flights to and from Papua," he said.

While the Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi revealed, the airline PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) gave a 30 percent discount for flights from Monday-Thursday, starting Thursday (5/12/2019). This is a special discount for Christmas and New Year.

In line with the Minister of Transportation, Pelni Jayapura appealed to sea transportation service users to buy boat tickets well in advance of the departure date. It is intended that passengers can set departure schedules and there is no buildup of ship passengers on D-7.
