Tembagapura Sector Police Holds Tutoring for Mimika Children

Tembagapura Sector Police (Polsek) in collaboration with the PT Freeport Indonesia CLO division and Harmony Sinergi within the past four months organized tutoring (Bimbel) to dozens of school-age children in Kampung Banti and its surroundings, Mimika Regency, Papua.

Tembagapura Police Chief AKP Hermanto in Timika, Saturday, said that the tutoring activities were carried out in the new Banti State Elementary School building with a duration of twice a week, every Wednesday and Friday.

"We have done tutoring activities for children in Kampung Banti in the past four months, because until now there the school has not been active since October 2017," he said.

He said that since 2019 the Ministry of Education had rebuilt a school building in Kampung Banti. The previous school building (SDN-SMPN Banti One Roof) built by PT Freeport Indonesia was found to be burned to the ground by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) when it took control of the Banti and surrounding areas around February 2018.

Not only the school building, the KKB also burned the Waa-Banti Hospital facilities owned by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Development Institutions / LPMAK.

Even though the school building has been rebuilt in Banti Village, up to now Mimika's Basic Education and Culture Office has not reactivated teaching and learning activities in Banti.

AKP Hermanto said his staff took the initiative to provide tutoring to school-age children in Kampung Banti and surrounding areas so that the young generation could gain knowledge, even with facilities that were far from adequate.

"We took the initiative to take advantage of the existing school building facilities, rather than being left dormant. Initially only one or two children participated. Now at least 80 children took part in the lessons. They came from Kampung Banti 1, Banti 2 , Kimbeli and Opitawak, "explained AKP Hermanto.

According to him, before being able to use the Banti SDN school building, tutoring was carried out in the school yard. "We do this tutoring activity so that children do not go with their parents to wash gold grains in Kali Kabur, because the panning activity is very high risk, especially for children who are still small," he added.

Until now the Banti area and its surroundings are still heavily guarded by around 60 Brimob personnel who are members of the Nusa Safe Task Force. At the turn of the New Year's Eve on Wednesday (1/1) early morning, there was a firefight between the authorities and the KKB, which were suspected to be KKB from the Kali Kopi group.
