West Papua Province Asks for British Petroleum Commitment to Complete Construction of 465 Citizens' Houses

The Governor of West Papua, Dominggus Mandacan requested the commitment of British Petroleum (BP) through BP Berau Ltd as the operator of Tangguh LNG in Bintuni Bay, West Papua with the Agreement on Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) on the arrangement of housing environment for the north coast communities in Weriagar, Tomu, and Taroi, to be completed soon in 2021.

According to Dominggus, as the Governor of West Papua, he reminded again that in the AMDAL agreement, BP Tangguh was obliged to build 465 housing units for the people in 3 districts, namely Weriagar, Tomu, and Taroi within a period of 4 years that had begun construction since 2018 then .

"As of 2018, it means there have been 3 years, 2021 must be completed. This is the result of the AMDAL so it must be implemented. If there are many obstacles faced by the community, transportation, or material and so on, BP Tangguh still holds commitments and completes on time, I will also watch it, "explained Dominggus.

Dominggus also said, the first phase (2018-2019) had been realized 21 units spread over 5 units of Weriagar, 13 units of Tomu and 3 units of Taroi with semi-permanent wooden house specifications from the plan according to AMDAL, which was 465 units over a 4-year period.

For this reason, Dominggus inaugurated and handed over 21 housing units for the community housing structuring program on Saturday, January 18, 2020. "The importance of managing and utilizing natural resources must be accompanied by increased prosperity and welfare of the people according to the mandate in the 1945 Constitution," he explained.

Bintuni Bay Deputy Regent, Matret Kokop said, housing is a basic need of citizens and the government is obliged to fulfill it. Thus, various efforts have been taken, especially when referring to the Presidential Regulation 38 of 2015 concerning the cooperation of the government and business entities in the provision of infrastructure, the Regency of Bintuni Bay has also done so with BP Tangguh partners.

"Infrastructure development in Bintuni Bay is also largely a collaboration with Tangguh LNG, including the construction of 21 housing units in Weriagar, Tomu and Taroi as stated in this AMDAL," explained Matret.

According to Matret, the regent also advised the 21 newly built housing units as a starting point. "In the future, despite technical and socio-cultural constraints, the Regency and BP Tangguh continue to be committed to continuing the planned development," he said.
